Hot on the heels of not knowing anything about taking a turn, you can ask your candidates to name you the seven steps of casting a spell or activating an ability. While this won’t stump everyone, it will make a lot of them stop and think about how complex Magic can be. This lesson also covers how abilities are activated, which is essentially the same process as casting a spell, just without having a physical card to put on the stack.

We run this lesson second in the syllabus, because again, it reinforces something that many candidates will take for granted and turning it into new knowledge. This can also be a great opportunity to explain why magic doesn’t need to be played on a completely technical level. The phrase “Bolt to the dome!” is sufficient enough that the player doesn’t have to go through all of the steps explicitly.
